![]() ![]() Andrei Linde, a cosmologist at Stanford, told the New York Times in 2001. "These are very close to religious questions," Dr. ![]() Or it may be that space and time had some other forms altogether before the Big Bang-forms too alien for us to imagine-and that the Big Bang represents some sort of transition phase, where the universe went from a form we can't understand to one we almost can. ![]() ![]() It may be that our universe is merely part of many larger universes, some in different dimensions, and that Big Bangs are going on all the time all over the place. It seems impossible that you could get something from nothing, but the fact that once there was nothing and now there is a universe is evident proof that you can. Others attribute the Big Bang to what they call "a false vacuum" or "a scalar field" or "vacuum energy"-some quality or thing, at any rate, that introduced a measure of instability into the nothingness that was. One notion is that perhaps the singularity was the relic of an earlier, collapsed universe-that we're just one of an eternal cycle of expanding and collapsing universes, like the bladder on an oxygen machine. It was, rather, a vast, sudden expansion on a whopping scale. Although everyone calls it the Big Bang, many books caution us not to think of it as an explosion in the conventional sense. ![]()

Later, my behavior became increasingly irrational. Then, I felt numbness on the left side of my body, which my neurologist ascribed to “mono.” But I didn’t link my odd feelings with this physical experience. I thought my boyfriend was cheating on me and went in search of nonexistent clues of his philandering. I became fixated on certain things: I believed I had bedbugs to the point that I urged an exterminator to debug my apartment even when he insisted I didn’t have an infestation. I truthfully absolutely loved these initial scenes. ![]() If the novel were just the couple and their fight to live in their city, then what a wonderful book it would have been. ![]() But yet, despite these enormous setbacks and struggles, they live on. The city is crumbling around Nadia and Saeed, blackouts are frequent, the water supply is often cut and drones hover overhead at all times. This setting and story is what we come to expect from Hamid, who also wrote the flawed but admirable The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The novel begins with Nadia and Saeed, a couple living in an unnamed Middle-Eastern city. Exit West is one of the most bitterly disappointing and downright awful novels I have read in a long while. I rarely ever do this, but I'm rating and reviewing this even though I haven't finished it. ![]() The Fate of the Romanovs by Greg King5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() They reveal that the family was not treated in a barbaric fashion during their captivity, but rather with a great deal of civility. ![]() Petersburg, The Fate of the Romanovs challenges earlier descriptions of these events with a wealth of fresh evidence and a careful re-examination of established facts.ĭrawing from more than 500 previously unpublished documents, authors Greg King and Penny Wilson make compelling, controversial revisions to commonly held beliefs. Wise5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() I will say this: Good artwork is usually worth some money, so if an artist was paid, chances are it's going to be worth it. And really, it's all in the eye of the beholder for what constitutes great art it's subjective. A much better scenario than a book not finding its audience because of lousy cover art. The cover art might be amazing and then the inside is total garbage, but you know what? At least people bought it. Maybe the book is actually really well written, but nobody will ever know if that first engagement is a turn off. If it looks like someone phoned it in, perhaps the contents were as well?
